My Father and Mother

Exodus 20:12 says

“Honor your father and your mother for your days will be long upon the land the Lord God has given you.”

Ever since I was born, there were two very important, vital people to my life that care a lot about my walk with the Lord and the way I act towards my brothers, sisters, and friends. These two people are my father and mother, the dearest people to me, in my life besides my brother and sisters. Since I was born, they have advised me, disciplined me, taught me in the Word of God, and grounded me firmly in a biblical Christian worldview.

My mother and father are the ones who are careful on what movies I watch, what books I read, and what friends I have. When I am troubled, sad, or depressed I go to them and they are there to give advice. I have learned so much from them in baking, cooking, reading, and being schooled my wonderful mother.

God has instituted fathers and mothers for children from the beginning of time to guide them, direct them, and protect them in the decisions they make. My father has always been a wonderful example to me of patience, strong leadership, visions for a generation, longsuffering, kindness, and gentleness. I have always felt protected, calm, and content under his leadership. My mother has schooled me well in the subjects of humility, math, science, reading, and writing. I am thankful to be able to confide in her and discuss important issues with her.

My father and mother also great examples of humility to me. I have learned to be humble about my sins and ask forgiveness of people when I have done them wrong. They have also really helped me to be more careful as I am a naturally careless person. Their gentle reproof, kind reminders, and tender discipline is always a reminder of their love for me.

Every night I much enjoy sitting around the dinner table when my father raises stimulating topics of conversation like inheritance, courtship, politics, and issues relating to the church. Daily, I am refreshed by sitting under my father’s wise teaching.

My mother and father have also taught me to be more diligent. When I was about 11, I was convicted my daddy’s sermons on slothfulness; I needed to take up my slack and start working to improve the family oikonomia, Greek for economics. My goals has become more home, family, and church centric.

No, the person who made the difference in my life wasn’t a movie star, famous historical character, or even President George Bush. They are the people who have invested 14 years of their life into mine in loving me, caring for me, teaching me, and disciplining me. I love them, appreciate them and honor them for all they have done for me. There will never be anyone so impacting on my life as my own dear mother and father.
