This month’s article has been on my heart for several months and now I give it you my readers to ponder and think over.
Life is Precious
Sitting here on the couch in deep thought, I ponder on the miracle, the beauty of life. I ask myself questions about it. Is it really as precious as it should be to me? Do I marvel at it as much as I should or ought to? These little babies I see snuggled comfortably into their mother’s arms seem to grow up so quickly. One day they are so tiny; the next they are united with another in the bond of matrimony.
Enough pondering: I have a story for you ladies. Nearly 1 month ago now, I sat reading in my neighbor’s room keeping a silent vigil over their little one when their daughter and R, my sister, burst into the room in a fit of ecstasy. They were barely able to contain their excitement. “Guess what,” Bekah exclaimed. “Yeah, guess,” echoed Casey, their 7 year old daughter. “Um…. A baby animal,” I said in a half joking way. Both pretty faces nodded eagerly and they were soon followed my dear mother carrying a large shoe box. Opening it, I gasped when the light disclosed two tiny baby bunnies, weighing only a couple of ounces each and only about 4 inches in length. Both were huddled tightly together but still wary of any prying human hand.
The next day, we employed ourselves in giving the little animals sustenance but ended up quietly observing them and video taping them. THeir tiny frames attempted to hop with their back legs across the table, not quite mastering the technique. Finally, exhausted, they climbed back on their towel and huddled together.
On Monday we were rather distressed to find that one of the baby rabbits acted sick, shaking uncontrollably and leaning to one side. The behavior continued till that night when the other rabbit seemed to come down with the same mysterious ailment. Many tender tears were shed for these poor suffering animals. It was painful to watch such tiny, helpless creatures silently, slowly dying when all we could do was sadly watch. We opened the box that evening for one of the last times to find that the one of the little creatures would never breath again. THe last one was not far behind. They had breathed their last breaths and died. Lying there, the blank eyes staring into space and the beat of the tiny heart, finally stilled, evoked many tears.
The funeral processing consisted of me, my sisters, our dog, and the bunnies gently enveloped in our trembling hands. We buried them deep in the ground and silently placed a small makeshift cross over the small grave.
I ask, looking back, “Why did something so small, helpless, and so young have to die?” But in spite of all these questions I know that God chose to gently terminate their short lives for a reason, even though I may not know what that reason may be. I ma assured in this that God always keeps watch over the little sparrow that falls and every baby bunny that dies. Pondering back, we speculate on why they died. Were they handled too much, too cold, or injured?
Nothing we say can retrace the steps we took but I know I learned a very important lesson about life. Life is precious and a gift. New Life is a miracle and should never, ever be taken for granted. Why do people worry so much about the animal rights when every day we are terminating millions of more precious lives than those of the baby rabbits? Every day let us treasure more and more this miracle of life and never take for granted this gift that the Lord has given to us.
